10/4/2010
Noon to 1 pm

SMM: Who is Our Audience?

We’ve been spending our time the last couple of weeks asking ourselves questions inspired by the Blue Fuego talk. For today, let’s focus in on question 1 in our handout, which is as follows:

Who is our audience and how can we work together to better serve them (individually and holistically)?

- Faculty (Teaching and Learning with Technology)

- 16-18 year olds; Prospective Status (University Marketing) – “Teen Campaign”

- 24-50 year olds (World Campus/Continuing Education)

- General PA Public (Extension, WPSU)

- Staff

- Current students

- Remote campuses; all audiences there

- Alumni/Friends/Donors

- Parents – and children of, teachers of

- Thought leaders/opinion leaders/corporate/government

- Athletic fans

- Create a hub

- Work together: FBML to create “Social Center” Tab – allows entities to have voice

- Lifecycle of Penn Stater (Holistically)

- Build internal communities based on lifecycle and/or topic?

- Build those relationships

- Start thinking like a business
Who drives the most revenue?
Should we prioritize to them (revenue)

- General overall presence vs. targeted presences?

- What’s in it for me?
Are all audiences of the same importance?

- Use insights

- Numbers vs dollars

So ponder this question, in all its facets, and come on over with some thoughts. Attached is the handout from this week which contains several questions we hope to discuss in future Social Media Mondays. And here is the original Blue Fuego presentation: http://www.bluefuego.com/kang-psuworkshop.pdf. If you cannot make this session but would like to ask or answer any of these points, you can post a question or make a comment here: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/questions/BluFuPSU.

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be. (what is the future of SMM?)

Please circulate this week’s invitation to anyone you think might be interested in spirited social media conversations with actionable substance.

We’ve been spending our time the last couple of weeks asking ourselves questions inspired by the Blue Fuego talk. For today, we decided to focus in on question 6 in our handout, which is as follows:

What is Penn State’s voice? How should we talk to our audience?

- Casual, approachable

- Non-academic

- Consistent with rest of community

SMM: Facebook for Grownups: LinkedIn

I once described LinkedIn.com as ‘Facebook for grownups’. We started a LinkedIn page here in Outreach a couple of months ago… {cue crickets}… Now what? Is LinkedIn too boring to engage an audience? An enthusiastic administrator? I thought it might be a good fit for our adult learner demographic. Perhaps it’s the digital equivalent to a chamber of commerce event with lots of polyester and overcooked chicken. Or perhaps I just don’t know what I’m doing. Let’s discuss. {crickets}

OK, so it that doesn’t take, how about Dealing with Complaints on Twitter? Oh, and have you heard of booshaka yet? How about RowFeeder? And what do you think about Twitter’s new ‘Who to follow’ feature? I’ve heard very strong opinions in both directions.

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be. (Cricket obedience training?)

Please circulate this week’s invitation to anyone you think might be interested in spirited social media conversations with actionable substance.

A recent Mashable article explains Why Online Education Needs to Get Social. A survey of college educators says “52 percent used at least one [Web 2.0 site] as a teaching tool.” 52%? What’s going on here at Penn State? I think it’s time we start talking about this. Professors are starting to ask me questions, and frankly, I’m not sure how to answer them yet.

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable and we remain open to your interests and desires.

8/2/2010
Noon to 1 pm
329 Building at Innovation Park
Room 413

SMM: Why Do I Feel So Compelled to Smell Like That Man?

Has everyone seen the Old Spice “Smell like a man, man” campaign? Everyone? Wow, that’s some good marketing then. It’s entertaining and interesting, and even winning awards like crazy – The Cannes Lions Grand Prix, Commercial of the Year by the Association of Independent Commercial Producers, even nominated for a 2010 Primetime Emmy award. And that’s just for the TV commercial. What they’re doing with social media is even more fascinating (responding to tweets, blog posts and comments with short, hilarious videos featuring Mr. Muscles himself clad in only a towel).

But some are saying that what is causing a lot of laughs in the short run is possible damaging to the long term brand. Social media demands a certain brand authenticity. Is Old Spice dodging and weaving around that by making fun of itself?

Much to discuss including what elements of this we could learn from and use? What? No place for playful marketing in higher ed? Penn State then? What about this and this and my favorite example (“that show is bananas man”)?

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be. (Sassafras)

SMM: Back to Basics

The last few Social Media Monday sessions have leaned toward strategic and philosophical conversation (and debate). I thought we’d reel it in a bit and focus on some more basic elements. The highfalutin conversation is great, but so is a sturdy foundation.

I feel we should spend some time on some very basic, yet very important items, such as:

How to write a meaningful, interesting and useful Facebook/Twitter update. (Always include a link)

YouTube tips, tricks and good practices. (Compelling titles, thorough descriptions)

Integrating Social Media brands in Traditional Media. (‘Find us on Facebook’ icon on your postcards)

Increasing your followers without compromising your integrity. (To follow or not to follow?)

And much, much more.

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be. (Local Original Music: Where Have You Gone?)

Please circulate this week’s invitation to anyone you think might be interested in spirited social media conversations with actionable substance.

SMM: Back to the Wheel of Topics

Great crowd and a great conversation this week. The diversity of unit/college representation always delights me.

No news or stats popped out to me this week, so I thought we’d return to the Wheel of Topics. http://outreachmarketing.wordpress.com/2010/06/25/smm-for-june-28-back-to-the-wheel-of-topics/

We have a few social media related events coming up, so I am sure some announcements will be made. For instance, there is a Faculty/Staff Social Media Meetup planned for Wednesday. More info here: http://www.meetup.com/Mashable/11096/

Please circulate this week’s invitation to anyone you think might be interested in spirited social media conversations with actionable substance.

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be. (Can anyone explain the offside rule in the World Cup games?)

Back to the Wheel of Topics. You can choose as many as you want. If you voted last time, feel free to vote again. What say you?

Noon to 1 pm
329 Building at Innovation Park

SMM: Facebook & Twitter Changes and More

I thought we’d discuss some of the recent changes to Facebook and Twitter as well as some new research and articles that have been published recently, such as: ‘Facebook followers are worth $138 apiece’? (http://mudc.at/979V0k) and ‘Celebrity Twitter Followers have Zero Influence’ (http://mudc.at/bflK7J).

As for changes, you can now, for the first time, remove a founding administrator from a Facebook page. This is meaningful in business and higher-ed because of turnover and changing responsibility. Many less hoops to jump through, now, when an employee leaves.

And what is up with Facebook Community Pages? Not even sure if Facebook has made up their mind yet.

And what of the 250% increase in fans, overnight, of Ohio State’s Facebook page. LSU: 67.5%, Penn State: 0%. What’s going on? http://mudc.at/bQBRxb

Twitter added a geolocation feature. What is it? Do we care? http://mudc.at/abBfLh

Also, an interesting (and concerning) conversation, this week, on the ‘Telling Amy’s Story’ Facebook page that we’ll talk about. http://mudc.at/bA4hwn

Please circulate this week’s invitation to anyone you think might be interested in spirited social media conversations with actionable substance.
